It all started during another scientific conference. After the usual rhetoric, and several rounds of Stim-Bright pills, the conversation turned to the latest list of destoryed scientific outposts, the newest weapons and how they have been misused, and fellow scientists who have been slaughtered by their own race because they did not make their new weapon fast enough, and who everyone was expecting to go next. They all looked around and realized that they have been pushed around long enough by the military arms of the Echo Cluster. They were pissed, and they weren't gonna take it anymore. The University is an alliance of scientific minds of the Echo Cluster who realized that the militaries of the other races have had their time and have failed to produce any worthwhile results, and as such should be eliminated. Their ship designs are centered around the idea that if you are going to do something, do it right and do it well. The net result is a fleet of specialized ships that were designed to work together using the latest technology, as well as being able to be upgraded. Their ships tend to have weaker hulls, but their stronger than average shields make up this loss.
